This season, Westlake Schools are mounting two terrific productions: The ABBA musical Mamma Mia! and the witty, satirical play, Three Birds Alighting on a Field, by Timberlake Wertenbaker.

Mamma Mia! by ABBA is the ultimate feel-good musical that will have you singing and dancing in the aisles. Set on a picturesque Greek island, this heartwarming story follows Sophie, a young bride-to-be, on a quest to uncover the identity of her father before her wedding day. As her mother Donna reunites with three men from her past, chaos, laughter, and unforgettable memories ensue. Featuring the iconic hits of ABBA, including "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me," and "Super Trouper," this dazzling show is a joyous celebration of love, friendship, and the magic of music. 

Sing-along on Friday 9 May - The cast of Mamma Mia! would like the audience to join in with them in a “Sing-along-a Mamma Mia!” On this night – and this night only – audiences are encouraged to sing along with the cast as they perform ABBA’s hit songs. Further to this, the interval of this show will last 30 minutes to allow an auction to occur. This auction will be in support of the 2026 Performing Arts Tour to the USA (New York and LA), during which audience members will be able to bid on numerous goodies. These include gift baskets, free drama or dance lessons, gift certificates, and romantic dinners.

Mamma Mia! has a cast of 90, and an orchestra of 15 of Westlake Schools’ finest talent.

Three Birds Alighting on a Field by Timberlake Wertenbaker is a sharp, darkly comic exploration of art, ambition, and societal status. Set against the backdrop of London's elite art world, the play follows the struggles of a failing art gallery and an opera house desperate to reclaim relevance and prestige. As characters grapple with their desires for success, beauty, and recognition, Wertenbaker offers a biting critique of cultural elitism and the commercialization of creativity. Witty, insightful, and thought-provoking, this play challenges audiences to reflect on the true value of art in a world obsessed with image and status. 

Three Birds Alighting on a Field boasts a cast of 40 of Westlake’s finest acting talent. 

Westlake productions have built an enviable reputation for high-quality productions, earning students, staff, and productions 35 awards regionally and nationally. Into the Woods – Westlake Production’s 2023 musical – won seven Auckland Live Showdown Awards, including The Best Production of 2023 Award. The Three Musketeers – Westlake Production’s 2023 play – won six Auckland Live Showdown Awards, including The Best Production of 2024 Award.
