“Goodnight Mister Tom” tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a young, abused evacuee named William Beech and a reclusive, elderly widower named Tom Oakley, set against the backdrop of World War II. Initially, Tom is reluctant to take on the boy, but their bond grows as Tom nurtures William’s physical and emotional well-being, helping him overcome past trauma and discover his talents. The story explores themes of resilience, healing, and the power of human connection, ultimately showing how love can transform lives.

Written by Michelle Magorian, Goodnight Mister Tom, won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment
